Mendelssohn's best known and loved choral work follows the biblical story of the prophet Elijah. It contains scenes covering the bringing back to life a dead child, Elijah's confrontation with the prophets of Baal, the ending of a terrible drought, Elijah's further trials and ascension into heaven. The music is always melodic, and often stirring and dramatic - not to be missed.
