The Box Hill Chorale was formed in 1946. In 1984 the choir was invited to become a chapter of the Royal Victorian Choir, which traces its origins back to 1868. Today the Chorale is a friendly ensemble of around 75 members. The Musical Director and Conductor of the Box Hill Chorale is Andrew Wailes, who has directed the choir since 1995. He is widely acknowledhed as one of Australia's leading conductors and choral specialists. BHC is a large and friendly community ensemble, which performs classical sacred and secular choral works, as well as part songs, oratorios, operas and madrigals. The choir regularly appears with professional soloists and orchestral ensembles, and also regularly collaborates with leading choirs and community ensembles which in recent years have included the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Orchestra, Camberwell Chorale, Melbourne University Choral Society, The Australian Children's Choir, Hawthorn Band, Glen Eira City Choir, Music Glenelg Festival Singers and the Choir of The Australian Catholic University. There are usually three major concerts each year, as well as several smaller performances or appearances. Recent venues have included BMW Edge (Federation Square), Central Hall (Australian Catholic University), Box Hill Town Hall, MLC Music Academy (Kew), Hawthorn Town Hall, the Victorian Police Academy Chapel (Glen Waverley), Civic Hall (Portland), Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre (Mount Gambier), Whitehorse Centre and Melbourne Town Hall. Under the baton of Andrew Wailes the choir has recently given the world premieres of a number of major Australian works, including the Discovery Symphony by Dindy Vaughan, the Mary Mackillop Mass and Journey of teh Wise Men by Nicholas Buc, and presented Melbourne premieres of works including Christopher Willcock's Five Days Old. These have all been performed with the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Orchestra and have been met with acclaim. In 2011 the choir will perform Beethoven's Ninth Symphony with several other of Melbourne's leading choirs, and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. The choir rehearses on Monday evenings at the magnificent Box Hill Community Arts Centre, (Corner of Station St and Combarton St, Box HIll), from 7.45 - 10pm).
