Lovers of choral music and tango are in for a real treat when some of Sydney’s finest tango musicians join Coro Austral in 'Solamente Tango', a celebration of tango in its many forms - sung, played and danced.

Coro Austral, Sydney’s specialist Spanish and Latin American choir, will be joined by some of the finest tango names in Australia: leading tango sextet Adelante Tango with guest artist, one of Australia's top Bandoneón players, Maggie Ferguson, and dancers from Tango Spirit, led by two of Australia's finest tango teachers, Jacqueline Simpson and Anthony Miller.

The choir is also delighted to welcome back as guest artists Colombian soprano Paola Monroy and pianist and tango specialist Thomas McCorquodale, who both performed with them in their popular Tango concert in 2022.

Coro Austral, conducted by Artistic Director Margot McLaughlin, will open the concert with a set of choral tangos. This will include tangos by Carlos Gardel, widely regarded as the ‘father of tango’, and the visionary Argentinian composer Astor Piazzolla, a key figure in the development of the tango nuevo style which revolutionised the tango by incorporating elements from both jazz and classical music. Following this, they will give the first Australian performance with a tango ensemble of acclaimed contemporary Argentinian composer Martín Palmeri’s 'Misa a Buenos Aires ('MisaTango'). This performance, with Adelante Tango, will bring the traditional Latin mass alive with authentic tango rhythms and harmonies.

After a short interval, the mood will change to Milonga-style dancing with dancers from Tango Spirit. Audience members will be invited to join in the dancing, or just enjoy the atmosphere created by Adelante Tango, and be transported to the gritty streets of Buenos Aires, led by the quintessential sound of Maggie Ferguson's bandoneón!

And after the performance, ¡Vino y bocados! Everyone is invited to wine and refreshments!
