A highlight of this year’s choral calendar will be Coro Austral’s performance of Argentinian composer Ariel Ramirez’ popular 'Misa Criolla' and 'Navidad Nuestra', presented in collaboration with Instituto Cervantes.
'Misa Criolla' is a ground-breaking folk-mass. First performed in 1965, it became a global sensation with its setting of the traditional Latin mass to familiar Argentinian song and dance forms. 'Navidad Nuestra' is a folk drama of the nativity of Jesus Christ in the rhythms and traditions of Hispanic America. Poet Felix Luna provided the lyrics, and his collaboration with Ramírez produced a marvellous Hispanic American work telling a story that has universal appeal.
In celebration of Coro Austral’s 15th anniversary, members of the public have been invited to 'Come & Sing' with them. As Sydney’s specialist Spanish and Latin American choir, Coro Austral will also perform a varied selection of favourite songs from Argentina, Chile and Spain.
This concert will be co-directed by artistic director Margot McLaughlin and Chilean-Australian composer/musician Hernan Flores, and the folk rhythms will be brought to life by an ensemble of musicians playing traditional Latin American instruments.
And afterwards everyone is invited to wine and refreshments!
